Until I finally saw Jaws in widescreen, I always thought it starred Oy Eider and Rich Drey. Worst... Pan & Scan... ever...

But on the proper subject of shots that are simply breathtaking in widescreen, I'd have to go with the approach of the helicopters out of the sunset in Apocalypse Now. Or the boat approaching the hellish bridge at night from the same film.
