Some research, some questions

Hello people,

I'm about to buy my first DVD player. I don't have a progressive scan TV, so I was looking for something
A little research on the web, suggested that the Pioneer DV-440 is probably the way to go.

It can play CD/CDR/CDRW/DVD/DVD-R/DVD-RW/DVD+RW/VCD/SVCD/XVCD/XSVCD/MP3, has good audio and video quality and good reliability.

It got excellent user ratings from VCDHelp, C|net , Amazon, Audio review, Consumer review and ePenions.

This player can be bought in several US locations for Unfortunately, it does not seem to be easily hackable.

Now, for the questions:

1) Is there a better model for a similar price? The reviews aggregated ratings from the sites above seem to imply that there isn't.

2) Is there a model of comparable quality and price but that will also allow me to watch region 1 NTSC as well as region 2 PAL titles on any TV?

3) Where do I find a reliable and inexpensive vendor, preferrably in Canada or one that will ship to Canada without charging me an arm and a leg? Is there a site that compares Canadian "regular" and mail-order shops?

Thank you very much,
Alex.
