I'm desperately trying to figure out why one would want to install a Divx player in their computer.

That is kind of like modifying your car to run on regular gasoline. However, to make it a fair comparison, regular gas would have to:

a) Provide less power than unleaded
b) Only be developed and sold by subversive bunch of lawyers and retailers
c) ONLY SHOW PART OF THE F***ing PICTURE!
