I think it is the high ratings moreso than a desire for Samus though. I have never even played teh Metroid games but the ratings and the fact this was an FPS made me run out and get this title.

As a big fan of the original Metroid, I'm not sure if I would have bought it if it were just another FPS. After all, there's no multiplayer, co-op or deathmatch. If I'm going to buy a single player game, it better be damn convincing. The whole fun of the ngc is the multiplayer games. There are some fun singleplayer games(RL), but the best ones (SMB1&2, SSBM, etc...) are multiplayer.
That said, MP is certainly more than just another FPS. There are some big nostalgia goggles, no doubt, but MP is true to the original, and that's what sold me. It's like you finally get to do all the things (Scanning creatures, etc. Pretty much the visor system...) that you suspected Samus was doing in the original game. And I haven't figured out the whole story yet, but it does explain some things...
Anyways, a damn convincing game, IMO...
