it isn't cheaper, and is NOT compatible with all players. Look in the DVD-R forum for more details. the PLUS format is newer than the "-" format, and subsequently is only compatible with players that incorporated the + spec into them.
I've never had any problem with -R's, as they have worked in every player I've put them in
