Well, "need" is a subjective term, of course, but if you're a fan of the movie, I think you'll love the bootleg edition. The extra footage adds to the story but doesn't fundamentally change anything. It just gives you more insight onto the characters' background and into the time period of the movie. Also, it should be noted that the title of the bootleg cut is actually Untitled. Cameron Crowe wanted this to be the name of the theatrical release, but the execs didn't like it, so he had to come up with something else. So, he just made Untitled the name of his extended edition.

It's also worth pointing out that the theatrical version of the film is included in the deluxe package, as are all of the extras except for the HBO featurette and the "Fever Dog" music video. It's up to you whether that makes the orginal release worth keeping - I ended up keeping mine.

So anyway, sorry for such a long and ambiguous answer. If you're looking for something a little more definitive, then here it is: Yes, buy the bootleg edition.
