My old Toshiba used to have problems if there was dust on the disc, but my new Toshiba played Devil's Backbone just fine with several very heavy gouges on the disc.
I kept meaning to take it back and exchange it, but I never did.
It was on the spindle in the case and wasn't loose at all, so it would have had to have happened prior to packaging.
I only worry about the scratches being so severe that it could lead to dvdrot down the line, if oxidation can cause it.
Oh, well. It's such a good movie that I wouldn't mind buying it again...
