The Pioneer would probably play the VCDs just fine. Try the Denon anyway and if it doesn't play the VCDs, exchange it for the Pioneer. Even if the Denon has better picture quality than the Pioneer, the Pioneer might not be
that far behind it.
You just never know until you try...
