This movie really does benefit from multiple viewings. I was able to focus on others parts of the story in my subsequent viewing. Another quick question:
Ichi's final hit list included six individuals: Longie, Kakihara, Karen, the twins, and Takayama. Why was Kaneko not on this list? Was he supposed to be saved or was Jijii trying to set him up by telling Ichi that they were brothers? I believe he wasn't supposed to die and the fact that he did was just another indication that Jijii was losing hold on what he thought he could control. I mean up to that point his manipulations were working as planned until Kaneko intruded during Kakihara and Ichi's duel. I hope that makes sense. I need to get some sleep.
