I'm not sure how it's a payoff. It seems to me that it's really the opposite of a payoff. It raises many more questions than it answers. In fact, it doesn't answer any questions. I mean, is the payoff that Ripley kills Dallas rather than the Alien? I also continue to think that it presents a speed bump in the final stretch of action by taking Ripley away from the main plot thrust (self destruct) and even the feel of that segement (the look, sound and pace of the "kill me" scene just doesn't match those that surround it.)
