Napoleon Dynamite

I want to put this battle to rest. I am hearing alot of criticism of this film from people who either refuse to see it, or are too egotistical to want to enjoy this film. Now, if you honestly viewed this movie with an open-mind and can argue your view intelligentally, then I respect your decision not to like this movie, but for those who haven't even given this film the chance it deserves, because of the way it was marketed, or because it "borrowed" its style from too many other directors, read on:

THE PLOT
How can anyone be turned off by something as universal as high school life, and the life of the akward outcast? Now, given that the plot is fairly untraidtional in its features (no obvious-loud plot twists, no 'messages', and no forced character moments) it would seem that an audience would enjoy some variation in seeing a movie that wasn't spelled out and bland. I know I instantly latched onto this films simple method of story telling, where things were left to the audience to assum instead of being spoken by characters as obvious dialouge.

ALSO, if you watch only 1 part of this movie, watch the first 10 minutes. I haven't witnessed a movie in recent years that introduces its characters in a more creative way than this movie. We see a well edited and planned group of scenes, that systematically introduces all the characters and their traits without being overly wordy.

THE STYLE
Now, I before anyone, would be critical of anyone whose style/movies seem to mimick Wes Anderson (in the time of Wes) or any of his predicesors, but if you actually view the film, you would instantly know that Wes DIDNT make this movie, because although it is very stylized, the style is completely different.

In the same way anderson frames each shot filled with unremarkable detail, Hess frames his shots with very little detail, only as much as needed, but the style of his enviornments is just as surreal as Anderson, in a much different class and area.

Give the movie a chance before you put it on your AVOID AT ALL COSTS list. This movie deserves a chance for being original enough to stand out above 95% of other movies this year. Trick.
