2001:A Space Odyssey-Live Chat-Dec 28,2004

here it is, the transcript of the 2 1/2 hour chat. for everyone that couldnt make it, you really missed out on something that the 2 of us that participated in the chat thought was an amazing experience. we both realized so many things about the film that we didnt notice before. keep updated on the next film and date in Software and we hope to see you there!

the whole transcript has been slightly edited to get rid of alot of the hrmmmms and ahhhhs, and ok's and chatter not related to the film itself.

i will be changing some of the text to bold and putting in some margins shortly, because in this format it is a little hard to read...

DVDfile chat-Please change your font to MS SERIF size 8 BOLD and your MSN name to what it is on the boards. says:
aboot 7 minutes to go!!
DVDfile chat-Please change your font to MS SERIF size 8 BOLD and your MSN name to what it is on the boards. says:
do you think we should watch the musical intro at the beginning or chapter skip ahead ?
abbttcstllo says:
it doesnt matter to me
Sephiroth Clone says:
i think we should watch it all
esc says :
shall we start in 60 seconds? start the film and press pause as soon as it begins.
esc says:
Welcome everyone! Please change your MSN name to whatever your name is on the boards, just so everyone knows who everyone is. Also, to make it easier to differentiate between names and what is being said, please change your font to MS SERIF 8 BOLD.
If i should dissapear suddenly because my computer crashed or anything, and you are all booted out of the chat room, just keep watching and I will get back online ASAP. i have the film running simultaniously on my other computer in the next room and because this laptop's screen has been known to die suddenly I have a backup monitor sitting beside me hooked up to the laptop... yes i am a firm believer in overkill.
esc says:
I've got my doritos, pretzels, some cup cakes, 2 litres of brita filtered water and i've had a pee break ... lets go!
Sephiroth Clone says:
I've always loved this film
esc :
the musical 'tune up' lasts about 3 minutes. the only other film that has this that i can think of is The Black Hole ... was this fairly common in the 60's/50's for the really big 'classic' films ?
esc says :
it is actually my pick for the best film ever made
Sephiroth Clone says:
really?
esc says:
yup
Sephiroth Clone says:
i never got much of it, in fact, this is my third time watching it
Sephiroth Clone says:
but the thing that made me so captivated was the score
esc says:
yay! MGM logo!
Sephiroth Clone says:
hah
esc says:
we all synced up ?
Sephiroth Clone says:
yep
Sephiroth Clone says:
single greatest opening sequence... EVER
esc says:
0:3:34 ... amazing shot.
esc says:
MGM PRESENTS ....
Sephiroth Clone says:
KUBRICK!
esc says:
BUM BUM BUM BUM!!! A Stanley Kubrik Production!
Sephiroth Clone says:
amazing stuff
esc says:
one of the things i love is that the effects still hold up today
Sephiroth Clone says:
i know
Sephiroth Clone says:
i think the last time I saw this was two years ago near midnight... and i fell asleep during the Star Gate sequence
esc says:
ya, i'd pretty much have to agree with you on the openening sequence statement
esc says:
Star Gate ? you mean the monolith in space?
Sephiroth Clone says:
yeah
Sephiroth Clone says:
the atmosphere is incredible
Sephiroth Clone says:
fake backgrounds! lol
esc says:
heh! really ?
Sephiroth Clone says:
yeah, three shots before this one
esc says:
0:7:00 ... actually you may be right. that one looked like a painting or backdrop
Sephiroth Clone says:
our super duper big tyme HUGE brothers and sisters, or ancestors
esc says:
the problem with films today is that we have seen so much CG stuff that when we see something real, it looks fake
Sephiroth Clone says:
yep
esc says:
ACK! look out monkey! snack time for the tiger!

Sephiroth Clone says:
angry apes
esc says:
is anyone else awake right now? its just me and SEPH yapping
Sephiroth Clone says:
this reminds me of the gangs violence that exists today
esc says:
poor little monkeys .. got chased away
esc says :
0:10:25 wow! was that a lion roar or the monolith arriving ? i heard something behind me and it sounded like a space ship or something zooming across the back speakers ... hrmmmm
Sephiroth Clone says:
im on my computer, fuck this music is intense
esc says:
ya, like The Shining
Sephiroth Clone says:
the perfection of the monoloth is quite an image applied next to the apes screaming, the rocks, the land … amazing imagery
esc says:
0:12:30 i wonder how many times kubrick had this filmed before he got the monkey freak out just right
Sephiroth Clone says:
haha
esc says:
dead silence
Sephiroth Clone says:
nicely edited
esc says:
nod. utterly fantastic cinamatography and editing
Sephiroth Clone says:
the BONE
Sephiroth Clone says:
the BEATING
Sephiroth Clone says:
the LEGEND
esc says:
the MUSIC !
Sephiroth Clone says:
great buildup
Sephiroth Clone says:
yet so minimal of a scene
Sephiroth Clone says:
he's (the monkey) learning and we see that… the evolution of man, through violence, thats pretty powerful
stuff
esc says:
0:16:00 wow. never thought of it that way
esc says:
so are you getting it yet? what happened to this band of monkeys?
Sephiroth Clone says:
what happened?
Sephiroth Clone says:
the monoloth killed them?
esc says:
the monolith was dropped on earth by aliens and it gave these monkeys intelligence when they touched it
esc says:
and now they are going to take back their water pool that was stolen from them
Sephiroth Clone says:
Wow, cool
esc says:
0:17:58 another shock/cut edit
esc says:
wow, you've given me something else cool to think about this film now. i never got that evolution thru violence thing
esc says:
bone to spaceship in 5, 4 , 3, 2, 1.... now!
Sephiroth Clone says:
very nice
Sephiroth Clone says:
that music is perfect
esc says:
skipping ahead about 4million years .. nothing of note happened
Sephiroth Clone says:
well i've always been obsessed with violence, and the nature of violence came off as the strongest point for the movie
Sephiroth Clone says:
i feel that Kubrick was trying to make a statement about that
esc says:
0:20:50 great effects that are still prefect today
Sephiroth Clone says:
and the usage of technology
Sephiroth Clone says:
the use of the bone is a item which they... use
Sephiroth Clone says:
before that it was hands
Sephiroth Clone says:
and that will evolve like men
Sephiroth Clone says:
to a spoon
Sephiroth Clone says:
to a gun
Sephiroth Clone says:
to a computer
Sephiroth Clone says:
and later... to HAL
esc says:
Kubrick had all of the models for this film destroyed after filming wrapped because he didnt want any of them used in any sub par sci fi films
Sephiroth Clone says:
haha
esc says:
which posed a problem when filming 2010 !
Sephiroth Clone says:
ive never seen it
esc says:
0:23:00 another utterly beautiful model
esc says:
it kind of takes away all of the mystery of this film because EVERYTHING is explained in 2010
Sephiroth Clone says:
who wrote/directed it?
esc says:
Peter Hyams, he did End Of Days, and im not sure what else.
Sephiroth Clone says:
one of the worst directors ever
Sephiroth Clone says:
truly, he is a hack
esc says:
its a very different style of directing, but he definatly tried to pay homage to Kubrick
Sephiroth Clone says:
ohh
Sephiroth Clone says:
fucking brit
esc says:
its not a terrible film at all and worth watching
Sephiroth Clone says:
the daughter on the phone has a stronger accent than "daddy"
esc says:
this guy's character was played by Roy Schider in 2010
Sephiroth Clone says:
Jaws Schider?
esc says:
yes
Sephiroth Clone says:
well I imagine he got his bigger boat
esc says:
hehe. True
esc says:
getting back to the violence aspect, before 'hands' there was an attack from another entity on the monkey, from the tiger, something else to think about
Sephiroth Clone says:
Hmm, race? it may be thinking too deep into it though
esc says:
i was just thinking of it as part of the progression of violence
Sephiroth Clone says:
Possibly, yeah
esc says:
0:33:20 i think it has gone from shocking editing to ultra slow, simple wide shots for everyone around the table... wonder what that signifies. maybe just a more stable time that they are in
Sephiroth Clone says:
boxed corn!!
Sephiroth Clone says:
the walking along the wall shows so much atmosphere and reality, it truly feels like space
Sephiroth Clone says:
that cant be said for most sci-fi films
esc says:
true. i was going to bring it up later, but i may as well say it now. this film accurately portrays the boredom of space travel
Sephiroth Clone says:
haha
Sephiroth Clone says:
Wonderfully
Sephiroth Clone says:
the isolation aspect is covered later in the film i believe
Sephiroth Clone says:
i agree
esc says:
yes. pretty deeply too
Sephiroth Clone says:
i may be adding this as one of my top 10 for cinematography
Sephiroth Clone says:
editing is amazing too
Sephiroth Clone says:
Esc, i think we should do "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back" next
Sephiroth Clone says:
i think that would get a lot of involvement from the forum
Sephiroth Clone says:
or even Kane
esc says:
i could do Kane again, but i didnt think it was that great. its not even in my top 100 films list. to put it as the #1 best film of all time is just to get bogged down in nostalga
esc says:
Empire is a good choice, i'd like to do return of the king EE as well, or even Fellowship EE
esc says:
oh ya, i was also going to say though that Citizen Kane is in my top 2 or 3 for cinamatography
esc says:
i have to put Zulu as #1
0:41:00 i think this is a one shot scene (Floyd giving the briefing on the moon)
Sephiroth Clone says:
is it? we'll see
esc says:
oop, the camera moved, i thought it just stayed there for the whole scene
Sephiroth Clone says:
oh well
esc says:
but i dont think it cuts away
Sephiroth Clone says:
yeah, they wont cut….. i was wrong … oh well
esc says:
0:42:45, ya dang. oh well
esc says:
oh, cut #3 …. and 4! … shoot, i was way off
esc says:
0:45:45 possibly the only effect in the film that is 'dated' … the ship hovering over the moon
Sephiroth Clone says:
pizzas here!
esc says:
cool
esc says:
time to break into my doritos
esc says:
0:47:00 good timing!! space-dinner is served!
Sephiroth Clone says:
are we in 2001 now?
esc says:
yes, we are. as soon at the bone became the ship we jumed to 2001.
i love how they dont just spell everything out for us about what has been found on the moon. you have to watch this film a couple times before you get everything
Sephiroth Clone says:
do we jump ahead in HAL? or is that 2001 still?
esc says:
only by a few months
esc says:
do you want me to spell everything out for you that is going on with the plot?
esc says:
0:51:00 oh oh, here come the monkeys again ... approaching the monolith, and the same musical score
Sephiroth Clone says:
no, i get most of it, im just trying to piece together what i remember
Sephiroth Clone says:
but ill have questions near the end
Sephiroth Clone says:
creepy music…. this is better than most horror movies
esc says:
0:53:55 ick, some grain and dirt on the print ... i am watching the old 1998 release
Sephiroth Clone says:
i got a copy from my restored Kubrick set
esc says:
SSSQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!! ... radio signal sent into space ....
esc says:
0:56:00 ahh here is where i was going to bring up the accurate portrayal of the bordom of space travel
esc says:
its such a shame that Kubrick is dead. i would have loved to see AI through his vision, and whatever he had planned afterward
Sephiroth Clone says:
hellyes!
Sephiroth Clone says:
though SS's version isnt that bad… overly humoric though, but decent… humoric - is that a real word?
esc says:
thats another film i'd like to watch ... AI I mean. its pretty deep in some places
Sephiroth Clone says:
it is
esc says:
1:01:00 the guy that 'played' HAL prerecorded all of his dialogue long before that film was shot and it was all edited in later. he was never on set.
Sephiroth Clone says:
Weird… it's synced too perfectly
esc says:
i wonder if it would have been brilliance or insanity to show the recording of that interview with earth, with the 8 or 18 minute gaps left in the film !
esc says:
god, HAL is so creepy.. ''happy birthday frank''
esc says:
''thank you for a very enjoiable game''
Sephiroth Clone says:
HAL being recorded pre shooting gives him a far colder personality
esc says:
yes, good comment
esc says:
1:07:00 another 'lonely' shot
esc says:
ya, i suppose he could not react to any of the other actors, which is perfect
Sephiroth Clone says:
god, he is so creepy, and that single red eye *shiver*
Sephiroth Clone says:
a villain in it's truest form
esc says:
i think i would be running naked with an axe around that round room 5 days into the mission with only HAL to talk to
Sephiroth Clone says:
HAL is so manipulative
esc says:
1:11:00 I’m freaking out here. thats a messed up shot… argg! my brain!
Sephiroth Clone says:
the condensed and rotating space is amazing
esc says:
i analyze shots and films way too much and if i cant figure out how a shot was done it bugs the hell out of me
Sephiroth Clone says:
haha, same here sometimes
Sephiroth Clone says:
look! it's the guys who stole E.T. from Eliott!
esc says:
HA! i was totally taken out of Fellowship of the Ring when i first saw it.. i wasnt prepared for the forced perspective size shots
esc says:
they looked great, but i didnt know that they were going to do shots like that. i thought that since the actors that were playing the hobbits were smaller than the other actors, i thought thats how there were going to do the size differences... little did i know!
Sephiroth Clone says:
those were a bit off putting
Sephiroth Clone says:
goddamn hobbits and their small size
Sephiroth Clone says:
just the breathing as the only sound effect along with the air filtration is so impressive
Sephiroth Clone says:
i think the emotions we feel from this film is greater in the imagery and sound rather than through the actors
esc says:
yes, sound design plays a bigger part of most films than the visuals
Sephiroth Clone says:
because they take a very minimalist approach with the characters, yet go all out with the imagery and sound
esc says:
the air and breathing get across such isolation and a claustrophobic atmosphere
Sephiroth Clone says:
it's truly amazing how wonderfully made this scene is
esc says:
1:16:30 that is a bloody impressive shot for a 1968 film
Sephiroth Clone says:
it takes so much time, but we get the point of space and it's sheer size
esc says:
no new posts on the board, or anyone else coming online i wonder what happened to the other 2 or 3 that were coming
Sephiroth Clone says:
isnt it amazing how in the begining of the film we were in a primitive landscape of dirt, fur, animals and here we are in the dead of space in a white - clean mechanical object and a man in a spacesuit… the evolution of man
esc says:
now thats progress!
Sephiroth Clone says:
now with the idea of the evolution of violence, i figure that we start off with the primates, then we know that us homo sapians follow, then the next step - as exploited in 2001 is the evolution of violence through machine
esc says:
ahhhhh, now tjhis is what I wanted to happen during these chat sessions, you are giving me so much to think about.
esc says:
1:21:50 and machines not only telling us what to do, but whispering in our ear as to what is right and wrong
Sephiroth Clone says:
Nice … trust fails
esc says:
'Im sory dave, but you are wrong, i cannot be... go replace the transponder ... "
esc says:
i wonder how many times HAL says "i'm sory" in the film, and if he has the vaguest concept of what it means
Sephiroth Clone says:
creepy
Sephiroth Clone says:
the red eye
esc says:
do you have 2010 ?
Sephiroth Clone says:
nope, never seen it
esc says:
ok. i kinda feel like watching it after this
Sephiroth Clone says:
haha
Sephiroth Clone says:
do you think he can read lips?
esc says:
and .... INTERMISSION.
esc says:
yes, thats the signifigance of that shot. he knows exactly what they are saying and he cannot let them stop him from completeing his mission
esc says:
i'm gonna get up and stretch for a bit .. back in a sec!
esc says:
in 2010 its explained that he was given conflicting orders and it messed up his program big time… thats why he kills everyone
Sephiroth Clone says:
that takes away so much of the mystery
esc says:
ya.
esc says:
1:29:50 OH we're back!!
esc says:
i didnt even have time to stand up
Sephiroth Clone says:
haha
Sephiroth Clone says:
my left leg is going numb
esc says:
both of mine are from the laptop... gotta stand, brb
Sephiroth Clone says:
that was an intense scene
Sephiroth Clone says:
especially after the intermission
esc says:
ya, its still all quiet after the intermission and then BANG! Death and flying bodies, but still no sound
esc says:
1:31:40 i heard kubrick say once what the signifigance of the pod and the claws were, but i forget what it is now
Sephiroth Clone says:
Yep, like i said, it's all in the imagery
esc says:
man, he really went flying. Dave has a hell of a long way to go into empty space to get him back
Sephiroth Clone says:
Odyssey, indeed
esc says:
1:34:55 it would be hard to miss that ship though if you got all turned around out there
Sephiroth Clone says:
haha

esc says:
i just noticed that the ship is very bone-like.
Sephiroth Clone says:
like a cranium and it's spine
esc says:
i was thinking leg bone, but thats true too
esc says:
1:38:40 HAL you SOB
Sephiroth Clone says:
1:39:20 - Computer Malfunction sign creates so much tension… that is scary
esc says:
you want to hear something that is very cool, but the author and Kubrick have denied it ... take the letters H A L and add 1 letter to each of them ... A becomes B, B would become C, etc
Sephiroth Clone says:
ok, im confused, add 1 letter?
esc says:
instaed of saying H.A.L., say the next letter of the alphabet that comes after H, A, and L.
Sephiroth Clone says:
OMG!!! Wow! how crazy is that
esc says:
ya, pretty neat huh?
esc says:
1:43:28 theres a classic Kubrick shot ... a character facing down and looking up at camera out of the top of his eyes
Sephiroth Clone says:
very cool
esc says:
1:44:20 bye frank! dont forget to write
Sephiroth Clone says:
Have fun... floating?
esc says:
i think in 2061 they find his body ... dont remember what happens with that plot line though
esc says:
by this point in the film things are just happening at a maddeningly slow pace. the opening of the air lock and turning of the ship is just so frustrating
esc says:
1:47:55 i wonder if this would work... how fast would you freeze/explode in open space?
Sephiroth Clone says:
but i think it's that frustration that adds to the isolated and lonley feeling
esc says:
exactly.
esc says:
there is that single sound out of silece theme again
esc says:
1:49:18 Kubrick shot again .. actor looking up at camera .... "youve been bad HAL, daddy's coming to kick some ass"
Sephiroth Clone says:
that fucker is going down!
Sephiroth Clone says:
1:50:34 - "...it's going to be alright again. I feel much better now."
esc says:
ha! take a stress pill.. ya that will solve everything
esc says:
1:51:30 i want that room!
Sephiroth Clone says:
that is some nice set design
esc says:
if i could move my legs i'd get the Oscar book thats on top of my TV and see what this won in 69
Sephiroth Clone says:
won Best Effects
Sephiroth Clone says:
lost Art Direction, Director, and screenplay
Sephiroth Clone says:
HAL sounds like Russle Crowe in "A Beautiful Mind"
esc says:
oh good my sweetie came in and grabbed me the book! i cant believe how little it was up for
Sephiroth Clone says:
pity, really
esc says:
Director.. lost to OLIVER, Art Direction.. lost to OLIVER, won effects, Scrrenplay lost to THE PRODUCERS
esc says:
this is the only part of the film i have a problem with. it isnt made clear enough that after he hears the prerecorded message and figures out partially whats going on, he goes outside the ship to investgate the Jupiter monolith, but he has no frame of reference for how close he is to it and he touches it and gets pulled inside
esc says:
1:58:00 and we of course have the same score we have heard twice before that heralds the arrival of the monolith
Sephiroth Clone says:
scary fucking thing
Sephiroth Clone says:
what exactly is the monolith?
esc says:
beautiful beautiful effects
esc says:
2:01:20 we saw the alignment of the planets at the beginnning and the monolith arrived and became active, and now we have another alignment
Sephiroth Clone says:
so this is a gateway into another dimension? or alien world, i imagine
esc says:
the monoliths are basically a tool of a very intelligent alien species that is 'helping' us through out time, but their plans are not exactly known
Sephiroth Clone says:
thus, the star child, if i remember
esc says:
short version ... aliens drop a monolith on earth about 4million years ago. monkeys touch it and gain intelligence... the aliens also put another monolith on the moon as sort of a test. when humans have reached a certain level of intelligence and technological advancement and are finally are able to find it and dig it out, it sends a radio signal to a third HUGE monolith orbiting Jupiter. we detect that the moon monolith has sent this signal to Jupiter and go to investigate..
HAL does his thing, everyone dies except Bowman and he goes out to investigate the monolith itself, but he has no frame of reference for how close he is and touches it and gets pulled in and gets 'evolved' into the 'star child'. it is revealed what else the Jupiter monolith is there to do in 2010 and the plans of the aliens are further but not completely revealed.
Sephiroth Clone says:
ohh
esc says:
wow, this just keeps going
Sephiroth Clone says:
yet, its so captivating
esc says:
i forgot how long this trip into the monolith was!
esc says:
2:07:59 hrmmm, looks like he's approaching a planet in there
Sephiroth Clone says:
another galaxy maybe?
esc says:
possibly, or another dimension. its very unclear what the monolith truly is or where it goes or what the aliens plans are
Sephiroth Clone says:
looks like Nevada on a bad acid trip
esc says:
ya, i wouldnt watch this movie high
Sephiroth Clone says:
i plan on it someday
esc says:
coming in for a landing!!!! finally!
esc says:
touchdown!
Sephiroth Clone says:
he's pretty out of it
Sephiroth Clone says:
aliens gave him a nice place
Sephiroth Clone says:
kinda like in the end of A.I., huh?
esc says:
2:11:30 i said it when i first saw this film, and i'll say it again ... "Oh Wonderful! Now We're In God's Bedroom! Just when i thought it couldnt get any wierder!"
esc says:
2:13:15 God has wonderful taste in bathroom decor
Sephiroth Clone says:
this is actually a pretty frighteningly beautiful scene
Sephiroth Clone says:
its so perfectly made that it's a perfect example of tension and suspense
esc says:
this 'moving through time' sequence is so unnerving and disorienting
Sephiroth Clone says:
its simple and horrific
esc says:
through the editing you think there is someone else is in there, but its just him
Sephiroth Clone says:
yeah
Sephiroth Clone says:
well except our hungry friend
Sephiroth Clone says:
all alone
esc says:
so many things i want to say about this scene but i cant type fast enough.
esc says:
you think he's reaching for the younger version of himself ... but then ......
esc says:
BOOM Monolith!!
Sephiroth Clone says:
im in awe
Sephiroth Clone says:
im in awe
esc says:
2:19:30 …. And … Starchild... the next evolution of man
esc says:
you there man? or are you drooling on the floor?
Sephiroth Clone says:
that was utterly amazing. i was stuck for a moment there
esc says:
ok, good
Sephiroth Clone says:
wow
Sephiroth Clone says:
that was great stuff, excellent choice of film. they dont know what they missed out on
esc says:
its wonderful once it all makes sense and you have figured out the alien/monolith aspect of the whole thing
Sephiroth Clone says:
yeah
Sephiroth Clone says:
i think this experience has made this film one of my favorites now
esc says:
i dont know if i would want to do this with a film i hadnt seen though. maybe if MSN and the film were on the same screen. right now i am having to look from the laptop on my lap up to my TV across the room
Sephiroth Clone says:
i've been putting off rewatching it so many times, but its great to rewatch it, remember everything i did and still discuss it
esc says:
you made some great points, i really enjoied this!
Sephiroth Clone says:
i did too
Sephiroth Clone says:
this was a great experience
Sephiroth Clone says:
i agree too, a film i have never seen would be difficult
esc says:
2:24:00 wow, short credits
esc says:
nod
Sephiroth Clone says:
i know, went by fast
Sephiroth Clone says:
SUPER PANOVISION
esc says:
ok. i'll see you on MSN and the boards and we'll set up another date to do this again soon
Sephiroth Clone says:
cya than
esc says:
bye!
esc says:
its been fun
2:27:00 wow, Strauss music is still going.
