Wow. I never thought anyone would sit down as read all that. I'm getting all tingley too Seph.

I am not in the film industry, but have given it serious thought as I am a total film junkie and analyse the shit out of movies as I watch them. I live in a city of 30,000 people and I have never been able to get up the motivation to get out of here, and the local college has no film studies program, but if it did I would have been back in university years ago. I am into all aspects of filmmaking from the writing process to directing, editing and especially cinamatograpy. I would love to direct and I have a ton of script ideas that have been rolling around in my head for years that I have especially been feeling the need to pound out and get out on the market over the last few months... wanna help me write them Seph ?

I wanted to comment a bit more on the 'God's Bedroom' scene towards the end. I wanted to mention a few things during the chat, but i couldnt type fast enough to get all my thoughts out, plus Seph had hit me with some clever observations that i had never realized about the film b4 and my head was spinning by the end. It is so totally and beautifully disorienting to see how Kubrick presented the bowman 'moving through time' sequence. He is wandering through the series of rooms just after 'landing',still in his space suit, and sees a man sitting at a table who is wearing a bath robe or smoking jacket. Bowman is about to speak when we shift perspective to the man at the table and he seems to hear or sense Bowman behind him. He rises to see who is there when we realize that it is Bowman himself, but much older. Older Bowman looks around, confused as to whether or not someone has been there behind him as his younger self has now disappeared. For this shot, the camera is set from young Bowman's perspective, further disorienting the audience as we think that maybe this old man is walking up to Bowman and will respond to him being there and maybe have some answers for him. But no, as young bowman is now gone and has 'become' Older Bowman. Older Bowman sits back down to eat his meal and senses someone in his bed behind him, turns to see an ancient Bowman, feeble in bed. Older Bowman stares confused at ancient Bowman for a moment and his older self stares back. Cut to a close up of ancient Bowman who is barely able to raise his hand out of bed and reach towards Older Bowman. Only when we cut back to Older Bowman, it is The Monolith, standing at the foot of the bed, that ancient Bowman is reaching for. He seems so releaved and shocked to see it, as if he knows that it will bring some kind of release.

I always thought that from Bowman's perspective, each time he 'became' a future version of himself he would kind of jump into that new body, but this would not be confusing for him, just suddenly skipping years of his life and finding himself in a much older body, as he would maintain all of the memories of his younger self plus have the memories and experiences that happened in the time that occurred in the interrum between the 2 time frames. Although we dont see the 10 or 20 or 30 years he is spending in the 'monolith habitat' between each jump, for him it is both happening and not happening. Spending a lifetime alone in there could have driven him insane, but it doesnt because he is experiencing it in huge leaps, but is also experiencing the time the between time periods he is in. Is this just evolution accellerating to light speed, or were the aliens just being lazy and wanted him to hurry the hell up and get evolved so they could get on with thier business??

PHEW! i am even confused after typing all that. hope thats somewhat clear what i was trying to say. its difficult to describe a scene that so accurately portrays an alternate universe where the concepts of before and after, here and there dont totally apply (such as sub-quantum states).

thoughts? opinions? your views on Bowman's experiences during the end scene?

Jezuz .. i practically wrote a book. I just checked out the other LINK that Morticia gave and there are some excellent points mentioned. everyone should read it through.
