You need to turn up the volume or see this in a theatre with a good sound system. What Bowman "senses" is actually the breathing sounds of the other selves, which you can hear on the soundtrack in the proper 'surround' location. The 'breathing' usually vanishes a beat or two before the visual POV changes.
