I read this article in the LA Times Calendar a few days back... and I have to say... I admire this guy so much.
I especially like this bit:
"going to a theater not just a communal experience but 'an event.'"
Being the youngin' that I am, I really haven't had the opportunity to experience an era in which going to the theater was an event. I guess that sorta thing lived and died in the 70's eh? I think the closest thing I have to compare is when I was with my family when we saw 90's blockbusters... Jurassic Park, Independence Day, and Titanic. Lines around the exterior of the theater, and people sittin' in the stairway aisles.
.. nowadays... It's hard to find packed theater showings. And when you do... it's usually 3/4 filled with annoying teenie-boppers. And to top that off, a bunch of them don't even respect proper movie-going conduct... non-stop talkin' and such.
... excuse the slight rant... anyways.
I feel like I can compare to the guy, 'cause a lot of my weekends are spent goin' to the movies as well. I'm sure I went to 30+ shows this year... which is a lot for me. It sure has taken it's toll on my wallet though. My main budget is split into two... movies... and food. Sometimes I put off eating a good meal so I can experience two hours in someone else's shoes.
I hope the man breaks his own record again someday. And I really hope more people follow his love for the theater-goin' experience... 'cause there's definitely something special in it.
