Looking at the manuals for those players, I'm pretty sure they only zoom in, not out.

I've never heard of a player zooming out. I think you may have an easier time trying to fix the overscan on your TV.

Some DVD players have a "widescreen" setting. Are you sure that yours is set correctly? This could cause this kind of distortion of the video image.
