I agree with you on the overscan stuff BUT I found this thread where Mur has screenshots basically demonstrating a "zoom out" on his Toshiba SD-4800 DVD player. Scroll down to see the screenshots

I don't know if this feature has been dropped in subsequent players. Mur posted a screenshot of an Avia overscan pattern.
