Elwood, all I have to say to 9/10ths of your arguement is that I think you're really naive as to what most women really are and what they really want.
As for the other 1/10th, wanting to see tits, sure I do, every man does. At the same time, the "celeb naked pics" folder on my comp is insanely small... I think it has like 20 pics in it or something. I don't hide the fact I watch porn, and when I could watch hot women fucking, why do I care about watching them topless? Sometimes you're in the mood for softcore, sure, but I certainly don't live and die on whether Portman shows her ta-tas or not.
If a role or situation needs nudity, I want to see it not because I get to see some titty I've seen a million of before, but because otherwise it takes me out of the film. It really is that simple. Closer worked without nudity, I loved the film, but the scene with Portman in the club WOULD have been better with her naked, for absolute sure. The whole point of the scene was her innocence compared to the other characters, while at the same time she had the "dirty" job. Also, the vulgar aspects of her job compared with the more romantic angle of the drama involved in the conversation. Love mixed with vulgarity... hedonistic sex as therapy for lost romance. Plus the simple fact she was a fucking stripper... It all would have worked better with nudity. No question.
