Fearless(Jet Li) DVD with English subs
Thought this was worth sharing, I got a copy of Fearless off Ebay. It has English subtitles, it's anamorphic and in DD 5.1! It's region 0 and NTSC. I really don't know how official this copy is, as I'd heard the US distributor asked that the DVD released in Asia not have English subs. It came shrinkwrapped, and even had the annoyong security sticker at the top. I haven't watched the entire movie yet, but the subtitles translate the opening plot text(I'm having a huge brainfart, you know like at the beggining of Star Wars), and look professional. The subs I've seen so far are spelled correctly.
The sound, sounds good so far, but I haven't gotten a true sense of it. The video, although clean and pretty detailed, has visible compression artifacts(the type that appears as grainyness), at least it does on my 119in screen. Not the greatest presentation, but for $12, it'll do until an official release comes along. BTW, the cover, looks like the one below.
EDIT: Now that I've watched the whole thing, here's a few more comments. For starters, this movie was excellent! Easily Jet's best HK effort, the cinematography was excellent, acting, everything! The subtitles were good for the most part, they screw up punctuation alot(nary a period at the end of a sentence to be found), but they are spelled correctly, and feel accurate. I never had that moment where I feel like something got mistranslated, because it doesn't quite match the goings on onscreen.
The transfer was good for the most part, the compression artifacts aren't overly distracting, on a 35in or less TV, it will look great. The sound is pretty good, I wouldn't call the 5.1 immersive, but the movie rarely calls for it, plus it's nice and bassy. Definitly a good buy, as the movie won't be out here in theaters until August.
