I honestly have never viewed Alien in any kind of subliminal sexual odyssey. To me it's always been on a gut level through basic primordial means. Raw animal/insect instinct. If you look at the animal and insect world, it is extremely violent, disgusting in many ways and would be an absolute horror in a human scale. The Alien is that. Survival.
And on a totally different note, I'm not sure if it's on the extra's or AMC special or what, but Giger talked about how this creature that has no eyes becomes that much more menancing. Simple but effective.
