Okay, at this point I'm thinking of putting down $180 more and getting the Toshiba model with the 160 GB HDD (RD-XS35). I have until this weekend to decide whether to get the basic model, or get the HDD model next week.

Can someone verify that my assumption about HDD units are correct? You use timer recordings to record shows onto the HDD, and then pick the ones you want to put onto a DVD-RW and it high-speed dubs it onto the disc. Then you can finalize it and play it on a friend's DVD player (that plays DVD-RWs) and then erase the disc to start over next week. I'd hate to pay the extra and then find out the HDD can only be used to record and view content on that particular player.

The only issue I'd have beyond verifying that is that the lowest price I can find on that model is from some place called PageComputers, and their seller reviews are very mixed. I wish TigerDirect sold this model, but they don't. For $20 more I can get it from OneCall, which has gotten better reviews and is a place that sounds at least vaguely familiar to me.
