I think its a combination of people not paying attention/knowing about street dates and a little bit of competitive edge. I've read that if a store is caught breaking the street date, they can encur fines of something along the lines of monetary fines of each copy sold etc. Unless its a hugely successful movie (harry potter, Superman, LOTR) caliber film I doubt most studios would care or even notice if movies were released a day or 2 early. I got 24 Season 5 a week early in December at a local K-Mart. I think that was just someone not paying attention to the date. So this must mean that most stores have their new releases a week to 10 days in advance.
