You are getting DTS-HD core (standard 1.5mbps) decoded to PCM, it should sound similar to DD+.

It sounds like there was an audio mastering error. Theatrical masters have surround levels +3db higher than home levels. They likely failed to attenuate the master properly. Does the DTS version also have stronger LFE response? If so, then its definitely a theatrical master without proper attentuation. Or it could simply be a mismatering with the wrong levels set for the surrounds on the DTS soundtrack.
