The difference:

DV-980H - Mediatek Chip for upscaling/deinterlacing
DV-981HD - Faroujda Chip upscaling/deinterlacing

The Mediatek is the best way for the price to avoid macroblocking enhancement issues (mostly with RPTV's, especially DLP's).
