My dad owns a Vizio 1080p 42" LCD HDTV and I was watching 1080p and didn't even know it. From the viewing distance (~15 maybe), it looked like 1080i does from 12-13 feet on my 2010 Toshiba 57HX81. We used an upconverting DVD player to feed 1080i to the TV and noticed some artifacting that went away when we fed 720p to the TV. Lastly, when my dad plays back recorded video from his cable box/DVR, he notices a
lot of combing.
But I digress....
