Basically the replies here kind of show why I thought the choice of a single film per decade would rely as much upon it's influence on a person's life as it's influence on society in general. So perhaps wise to watch out making a dogmatic statement regarding any single choice. Of course, it's fine if you don't mind rebuttals.
Like I chose Easy Rider for the 1960s but that's a film that influenced a certain sociological group within that decade, and not everybody. I know for a fact it did not influence my parents or their friends. They never even bothered to watch it and just thought of it as a teenager's flick.
I know they preferred films like Cool Hand Luke and the Clint Eastwood/Leone series. And then there's Poseidon Adventure in the 1970s. That was their favorite.
