Taking into account the chipsets used by the individual players themselves gives a one a better overall idea of thier upscaling prowess. Just because the HD-A2 is a great HD-DVD player doesn't necessarily mean it'll outperform a top-of-the-line SD upconverter like the Denon. The HD processing and SD processing are handled totally independently, hence the different HD/SD capabilities.
