Another difference is the A1 (and XA1) has Burr-Brown DACs for each channel (5.1 & 2.0 outputs) while the A2 uses a stereo Wolfson DAC for its 2.0 output.
Also I'm unsure if the A2 does this (or any other non-first gen model), but the A1/XA1 upsamples all internally decoded audio to 96kHz/24-bit.
