I have no idea what demographic you and your room mate fall into but if you are of the hard core gamer variety of course it gets very little use. It's aimed at casual gamers and kids, which is a perfect fit for a family. I don't think it's selling because it's cheap, that helps but I think it's selling because a whole bunch of people that grew up on the old NES and SNES now have kids and want something that they can play with their kids that is G rated.
On the controller I don't think it's as gimmicky as you think. For the hardcore gamer, yes, but if someone like my Mom can pick up a controller and play a game like bowling with some sort of proficiency then it's a miraculous breakthrough sent from the gods themselves. (the Atari 2600 joystick had too many buttons for my Mom)
