I've signed up for the Playstation Store, and fortunately not (yet) run into any of the problems with credit cards that you have.
I've downloaded a few things for both the PSP and the PS3, including Beats.
I agree, I prefer having a physical copy too, but when the prices aren't too high I don't usually have an issue.
