This number is about as useful as the $500 receivers that claim they have 2500 watts of power.
It is an inflated number using the dynamic iris at full blast, which aside from looking completely unrealistic (and way off from ISF standards) also burns off your eyeballs with certain material (Like Virtua Fighter 5's already bright island stages for instance). Of course, it is largely a function of how much processing the manuf allows you to amp up the signal with.
Samsung fails to report the true contrast ratio of this set, which would be a more useful statistic. For the record, the Sony I recommended above has a true contrast ratio of 2000:1.
