Yes Sunfire makes one heck of a nice receiver, and probably the most powerful one also (200 watts x 7 @ 8ohms). It's 4 ohm stable but doesn't mention power ratings for that. But knowing Sunfire It's probably 400 watts x 7). Yes they are expensive, and as such should at least include decoding for TrueHD and DTS-HD/HD MA. But for the time being Sunfire's decoding and HDMI is behind the curve.

But as far as stand alone multichannel amps go, Sunfire's are some of the best available. With gobs of power available and a great design that produces nearly no heat, Sunfire amps are amazing. Like their pre/pro, their amps are a bit pricey as well. But if you look around at places like Audiogon and eBay, you could very well find a 5 or 7 channel amp for a very good price.

Tubes are nice and sound great, but if you hunger for power a solid state is the best way to go. Now you could get a nice 2 channel tube amp (for the mains) and a 5 channel solid state amp for the rest of the speakers. This way for music listening you can enjoy all the benefits of that tube sound, and for full tilt movie watching, the 5 channel amp in the mix will deliver the surround goods.
