I have gotten best results from the Panasonic setting the audio to bitstream as you mentioned, turning off subaudio, and setting video to 1080i - then having the Reon video processor in my Integra DTC-9.8 do the deinterlacing to 1080p. Remember DVDs are 480i and quite a few BDs are 1080i, so you'd lose quality using the Panasonic's deinterlacer instead of the Reon. Final results are stunning A/V quality!
