It makes it so that basically any rule, if there were really anyway, is out the window. Whatever guesses we have been making about how the island works, all have in some way been explainable through some sort of "modern science". Time travel introduces doubt and paradoxes to everything and makes me totally lose interest. Even when it was starting to go more into the supernatural aspects I was hesitant but would have accepted that more than this.

I don't think the writers are going to use time travel i the sense of Back to the Future. Only Desomond's conciousness is what traveled and its only him. I do think the time travel let us in on some clues as to the bigger picture of the show

I think Charles Widmore is the Economist. I read some theories that have him coming up with the race around the world to see if he could not only find the island but send Des there to get rid of him. I think there is more to Widmore then what we're being shown
