I think killing aliens works at times... Halo certainly accomplished a satisfying combat atmosphere without ever using humans, and I guess that's because the tactics and strategy of a human opponent was still there.
Too often alien games just have them running toward you with ghastly looks on their faces, which is usually boring. I've never been one for the original Doom/Painkiller/Serious Sam kind of game where it's just mindless shooting... I can enjoy that kind of game on occassion if there are other factors that make the game compelling, like Doom 3's graphics or Prey's portals... but for the most part I want a more tactical experience, which is usually limited to human opposition.
Side note: this idea that Crysis is "pretty but boring" or "lacking innovation" is cropping up all over message boards, mostly as a way of console gamers or people with crappy PCs pretending they don't want the game. Crysis is anything but boring as any Youtube search could show you, and while not the most innovative game ever it combines sublte innovations and polished classics into a great experience, at least for the first half.
Crysis rocks.
