I don't have much experience in purchasing used a/v gear, but I imagine a lot has to do with brand, model and type of equipment. Something like a power amp, for example, is going to hold a higher value longer than a processor that will be outdated by the next generation. Speakers seem to hold value fairly well too, since they really never become outdated. That's not to say they hold a high percentage of their original retail value though, since I picked up a pair of Boston HD-8 bookshelves for $75, and I believe they were closer to $250 new.
BTW, I picked up my Yamaha RX-V1300 for ~$600, discounted from $799, simply because the 1400 was out.
