I would say Ben killed the Dharma people during the "Purge" in the early 90s.
Tom aka Mr. Nice did what he was told but was somewhat of a real nice guy. He believed in what the "Others" were doing but was just an order taker so I'm not sure if he really wanted to do a lot of the stuff Ben ordered him to. I've always liked the character of Tom, he never made me think of him as an Other except for a few different times.

I think the father reference was used to be a red herring for people to think that it was a flashback instead of the more shocking future flash forward.
Not sure when the Purge happened, but Monro, you could be right on the timing of it, based on Ben's appearance.
I always thought Mr. Friendly was creepy. I mean, after all, he was the one that was pushing for Jin, Sawyer, and the other guy to be killed, when Ben had obviously ordered them to not be killed. Tom was nice in some instances, but I agreed with Sawyer in that he needed to be shot down. The way Ben keeps managing to not share that same fate is impressive to say the least.
