Now I feel bad. I had to go look it up on Wikipedia. Can't say I ever heard of it until the CGI movie, even under its other title, The Sky Is Falling. I guess it's more well-known than Jack and the Beanstalk, but I never read a children's book or saw a cartoon or movie about it when I was growing up.
Regarding the smokey monster, I think Ben just shut down all the defenses that usually protected everyone from it. Keamy did force Alex to shut down the electromagnetic fence that kept it out.
At least the writers didn't forget about the smokey monster. Thought it might've been forgotten about like the 4-toed statue.
