Secondly, the chemistry had somehow changed. It wasn't gone or bad... it just wasn't the same. The characters just didn't seem to have the "snap" that they used to have.
Finally, I thought the usage of Book was somewhat careless. It's like the actor was busy, so he made a guest token appearance. Also, the killing off of my favorite character (Wash) kind of told me that they were ensuring that the series couldn't be resurrected or moved again.

I agree with you on this. The actors seemed to have too much makeup. And the killing of two main characters seemed thrown in. I remember Whedon saying he wanted to give the impression that anyone could die in Serenity, but what it really stated was what you said. The series had no shot at returning.
