Just for reference, every 360 you shake makes a noise and it is not the video chip. There is a sensor inside that determines which direction the console is standing so the ring of light can display the controllers connected in proper fashion, and it makes noise when it moves.
Also, for the older XBOXes where the video chip detaches, it generally does not fully detach and generally never bounces around the XBOX. The towel trick works for some because as stated above the video chip is generally not fully detached and overheating the console with a towel can partially reflow the solder, resulting in a temporary fix.
But as others stated, its easy to get the console repaired. Call the number, tell them you've tried everything and it still RRODs, then they will send you a box with free return shipping - plus the repair is free. Takes around 2-4 weeks from the time you first call to getting your console back depending how far you live from the repair center.
