Yeah... they do something similar in
Oblivion, where the character only goes unconscious instead of dead. Personally I call bullshit on that. I much prefer the
Morrowind way where the character does die, but you get a warning saying you've killed a quest important character.
Part of why I play sandbox games is the seemingly unlimited number of choices they give me. And by not allowing me to kill a certain character, they remove one choice. I'd prefer if they'd let me choose to just ignore their warning and go ahead with the game without being able to finish the story.
For a first playthrough chances are I'd just load an old save and not kill the important character, but for secondary play throughs it's nice to have the option.
Disclaimer: I haven't yet played GTAIV so if there's some extraneous circumstances I am not aware of then never mind. My above sentiments still apply overall, but I suppose it's possible there may be instances where you simply CAN'T be allowed to kill a character. Although right now I can't think of one.
