I loved the promotion for the film. The slogans they used were awesome in getting you scared:
"We always tell ourselves there is nothing to fear. Sometimes we are wrong."
"Lock your door. Pretend you're safe."
That plus the trailer had me at "hello." I was so enthused about seeing this. Even my brother who hates horror movies went and saw it. We both agreed that the tension just dies at a certain point. And the climax loses its impact, because of it, unfortunately. I think "Ils" did a better job in holding the tension from beginning to end.
Personally, if the film had ended this way, I would have been more satisfied:
Spoiler (Highlight or Triple Click to Read):If the Strangers had remained anonymous and after the couple regains consciousness and the Strangers are standing there with the knives. Then they blindfold the couple and just start giggling. Finally they just lean over and whisper in their ears, "You'll never be safe," and "We'll see you later."
The couple lives, but are forever haunted, tormented, and afraid that the next time will be their last. I don't know, for me that would have been more terrifying than what took place. However, I did like the Carrie-type ending to the movie. |
