While I generally agree with Justin about prefering coax over optical connections, I would have to say that "100 times better" is kind of a bold overstatement (although I figure he most probably didn't mean that literally).

I for one have both and I will be damned if I could make out even the slighest bit of a difference between the two connections (sound wise, that is).
However, what makes me prefer the coaxial cable is the robustness compared to the optical cable. And since I love to solder my own cable, coax is obviously the way to go.

But there have been heavy debates over which one is better.
If anything, the optical connection prevents you effectively from hum loops, should those actually be a problem.

To make a short story even shorter: If you have the option, I'd suggest to go with the coaxial connection. If you "only" have optical, you won't have anything to worry about as well, IMO.
