I agree wih some of the other comments made in those discussions that there is no detectable difference (at least not to the human ear) between coax and toslink. I'd challenge anyone to be able to tell the difference in a double-blind test.

As for which decode method to use, I'd suggest skipping a DD ready receiver and getting a receiver that is has a DD/DTS decoder. Run one interconnect (as opposed to 6... read 6X more $) and be in DD and DTS Heaven.

Your choice of interconnect may well depend on how many inputs your winning receiver has. Many in Sony's line (STR-DE925 for eg) comes with one coax and three optical inputs. If you have another component that only has coax out, then you'd have to use the optical for your DVD.
