Well, folks, I couldn't get into the forum yesterday, otherwise I would have put my 2 cents in then.
First of all, Justin, we've seen people in forums before who claim to be "expert" in some field, but who turn out to be wannabes. I could put "Banned From The Ranch" after my name in my posts, and you'd have no way of knowing if it's true or not. I'm not claiming that you don't work for Dolby, please don't infer that. In fact, from what I've seen you write here, I believe that you do. It just that on a forum such as this, it's risky to make assumptions about somebody's level of expertise with out some long-term exposure. Please don't take anybody's failure to instantly take what you say as gospel personally.
In a sense, these forums are an exercise in futility. We all want good info regarding our home theater systems, but so many times we get bogus info. (I know I've gotten, and probably given, bogus info in my time.) In the end, I guess all we can do is take what we know, apply what we hear, and try to make good decisions based on that info.
Now that I've got that off my chest...
The cables debate has made the rounds on all the major HT forums before. Here are my pearls of wisdom reagarding the subject. Cables make a difference. However, there is a point of diminishing returns, however. The difference between 5 cent/foot zip cord and $1/foot Kimber/Monster/etc. cable is probably going to be noticable, and appreciable. You may even hear some difference when you step up to the 10/foot cables. After that, I think it is all smoke and mirrors. I know that I'll never spend thousands on one meter of cable. Maybe that means that my ears aren't good enough, but I doubt that.
I've never been fortunate enough to do a blind A/B test with digital coax vs. optical. But those who have usually claim little or no difference. Certainly nobody before has claimed that there is a "huge" differnce between how these two sound. It certainly has sparked my interest. Maybe I'll pick up some optical cable this weekend and do a little test of my own.
