IMO in terms of looks I still feel the Integra is tops, and the Onkyo looks different than the pic you linked next to the pioneer which is the Integra. The Integra's flat black finish + gunmetal volume knob screams class through its simple yet industrial-looking design. Elite is too shiny and glitzy to look "high end," sorta yelling "look I'm midfi dressed in highend clothes!" And the regular Onkyo looks both a bit plain and kinda cheesy with the blue around the volume knob.
In summary, I like the way the Integras look the best! Of course, everyone has their own opinion.But you should be buying for sound quality, not looks. Still, if you don't like the looks of the Onkyo 705, why not scope out an Integra dealer for the DTR-6.8 which looks significantly different than the blue-volumed Onkyo 705: http://www.integrahometheater.com/mo...s=Receiver&p=i Note: the volume knob/power switch look much brighter here than they actually are due to flash of the camera, they are more a gunmetal color.

I was a bit confused, the 6.8 is the equivalent of the 705;
the 7.8 is the equivalent of the 805; the 8.8 is the equivalent of the 905. BTW, the 6.8/705 and 7.8/805 do NOT upscale. They will convert component to HDMI and deinterlace 480i to 480p but if you want to upscale everything to 1080p, for instance, you need the 905 or 8.8.

Well, is all your equipment right in front you your face. If its in a closed rack (which I assumed yours was since it is a theater room), does it really matter? I like my Onxyo...its classic...like an old friend.

The most "high end" Integra is IMO the DTC-9.8 because it is seperates instead of a receiver. But Onkyo has an equivalent piece which uses the same firmware so...

So, Ruined, in your estimation, can I do any better than the 705 for the money ($600-ish)?
I plan to (in a year of so) buy another high-end amp or possible separates. I just need a solid receiver that won't be a step down from my ELITE for the time being.

Nope that would be the best bang for buck. Was just mentioning the DTR-6.8 since looks are important to you - it will cost you an extra $150 or so though for those looks.

![]() Also, my HT is pretty much DVD/HD only, so the receiver won't be employed for much music. I start to wonder how much different Dolby/DTS soundtracks really sound on $500 models vs. $1K+ models.

The place I notice biggest difference is in amplification especially. But when you get to the higher end, you can use your HT setup for both music and HT then of course.

But as Ruined said amplification is where the biggest difference is at. |

I've heard "high-end" amps in demo theatres, and while I do hear a difference, I've never found it to be a $1000 difference--with DVDs at least. I know music is much more demanding.

Amplification isn't strictly about loudness. When I went from receiver-to-external amp, the difference in terms of sound quality (on everything) was and still is vast. It's like my speakers had burlap bags over the grills before even at usual volume levels.

I guess I’d have to hear it to really understand. I go to the cinema often and my system sounds like a smaller version of that. Perhaps the cinema has those pesky burlap bags as well.

Make sure you don't have a tiny mythical creature jumping around under your hood...such as a unicorn.
