Onkyo HD Receivers

All of these new models have TrueHD and DTS-HDMA decoding (requires a player with HDMI 1.3 output), not to mention the more expensive models have the Silicon Optix Reon chipset in them (same one featured in the HD-XA2) for upconversion of all of your sources.

Wasn't it Onkyo that was going to do an HD DVD player this year?

Yup.

How extensive has Onkyo's internet radio support been in their higher end models? Do they support passing of username/password to get access to subscriber streams?

That is really exciting and i am very impressed with their pricing. I wish Denon would make some announcements too, however, although I love Onkyo's sound quality, I just cannot get pass the very unprofessional appearance of their electronics. I just could not buy another receiver that would say DVD when I am watching an HD-DVD or video 1 when I am watching a BD or Cable. I love the fact that my Denon can have all the input names customized.

Here you go!

Quote:
Back in November Audio DesignLine unveiled some of the first details surrounding (pun intended) Denon’s forthcoming A/V receivers with HDMI 1.3 support, we now have a few more tentative details about the new ‘08’ series of receivers from Denon. It appears as if the receivers will be rolled out in two waves, the first wave in July will include the AVR-4308ci and AVR-3808ci with the AVR-1508, AVR-1708 and AVR-2808 following in September.

Again these are tentative details but should remain accurate baring any last minute launch snafus. The AVR-4308ci ($2,499) will sport four HDMI 1.3 inputs with two parallel HDMI outputs, support for internal Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD audio decoding over HDMI, auto lip-sync correction, 8-position Audyssey MultEQ, Ethernet & Wi-Fi capabilities for internet radio and presumably support for Windows Media PlaysForSure functionality. The 4308 will also support second zone component video output and digital to analog conversion for multi-zone applications.

The AVR-3808ci (also tentatively expected in July) will retail for $1,599 and features four HDMI 1.3 inputs, support for internal Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD audio decoding over HDMI, auto lip-sync correction, 6-position Audyssey MultEQ, Ethernet connectivity and again presumably support for Windows Media PlaysForSure. The 3808ci also supports digital to analog conversion for multi-zone applications. Both the AVR-4308ci and AVR-3808ci are said to have had their on-screen graphical interfaces redesigned as well.

The second wave of receivers in September will include the AVR-1508, AVR-1708 and AVR-2808 (no pricing as yet). The AVR-1508 AVR-1708 will support HDMI 1.3 but ‘switching mode’ only, in a nutshell that means that they will support HDMI audio, ‘Deep Color’ and 1080p pass-through but not internal Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD processing, although you can still achieve lossless audio from Blu-ray and HD DVD output as PCM from the players over HDMI.

The AVR-2808’s HDMI 1.3 path is said to offer the same functionality as the AVR-4308ci and AVR-3808ci, i.e. internal Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD decoding as well as auto lip-sync correction. Good stuff indeed, I can’t wait to get my hands on the AVR-3808ci.

I was going to get the Denon AVR-2807 (I always wanted one since I got into HomeTheater) until I read this...Onkyo seems be the best value here plus comes out months before Denon's AVR-2808.

That Denon news is old stuff from months ago. Since then there hasn't been a peep out of them. I doubt we'll see their new units until the end of the year. Which is fine with me, it gives me more time to rest the wallet.
Note that it doesn't say it decodes DTS-HD MA. Hopefully this is just an oversight, otherwise no sale for me.

Why don't they list the WPC in the higher end Onkyo avrs?

And great googily moogily those last two (875 & 905) upconvert ALL signals to 1080p!

However, what are you really getting for the extra $400 in the 905 vs. the 875?

Networking/internet radio and a much more powerful amp (toroidial) not to mention preamp/processing and amplification sections are seperated inside.

One has to wonder - if you took an HD-A2 and ran its 1080i output to one of these onkyos with Reon 1080p processing, would it look identical to the HD-XA2?

Hmmm. Can you explain the benifits of a toroidial amp more? Is that like using a class A amp vs. say a class C amp? I wonder what the hell is in my old Pio Elite avr now.

A toroidial transformer in the amp in theory causes less distortion and noise.

Thanks Dugpa. You know, after reading all 11 pages on AVS about these Onkyos, I must admit that until some reviews come out I'd wait. I'm kinda gungho on the 905, but I'm worried about two things:

1) What kind of sound it produces and if it would mate well with my speakers.

2) Just because it's got that fancy schmancy Reon chip, will it be implemented correctly.

Onkyo to Bow First DTS-HD Master Audio-Capable Receiver

Quote:
Onkyo Electronics has announced plans to release two new A/V receivers later this year, each supporting full DTS-HD Master Lossless Audio and Dolby TrueHD decoding.

The TX-SR605 is due in late May, with an MSRP of $599. It will be followed later this fall by the top-of-the-line, THX Ultra 2-c certified TX-S4806, which will list for a cool $1099.

Both units are the first next-gen hardware to hit the market capable of decoding DTS-HD Master Lossless Audio at their full resolution, via HDMI V3.1A connections. Until now, there has been no way to enjoy DTS-HD soundtracks on Blu-ray and HD DVD discs at their full potential, as all current next-gen receivers and players have, at best, only been able to extract a standard DTS 1.5mpbs "core" audio stream from DTS-HD-encoded discs.

I didn't say there was NO discussion, just not much given the discussion on the HD-A2, HD-A2, and the Sony Blu-Ray player.

I believe Pioneer is also releasing an ELITE A/V receiver with these kinds of capabilities too.

Peace...

Although, I heard the top of the link Audyssey EQ is a bit better than Pioneer's EQ.
