Why is the receiver humming? Shouldn't Onkyo fix this? I don't want it to hum at all, and I shouldn't have to spend $50 or $500 for it not to make unnecessary noise.

No, it is not something necessarily "fixable" by Onkyo. It has to do with ground loops and AC noise. Some equipment is more sensitive to it than others - why are you freaking out when you haven't even figured out if you are affected by it or not?

My $3299 Parasound AVC-2500 was more sensitive to AC noise than my $1699 Integra DTC-9.8. That right there shows you that its clearly not a quality or expense issue, just a matter of how the electronics work in some people's house vs. others.

Also, in addition to the $50 transformer which works wonders, I'd advise plugging all of your gear into the same wall plate. If you, for instance, plug most of your gear into one outlet and then your subwoofer into a different outlet across the room, it can cause problems like this.

I'm not freaking out; I just don't want to waste time on something that might have "issues."

Everything has "issues." I can't think of a product that doesn't. I wouldn't not buy the best overall product because of fear of something that is very-situation specific that you might not even experience - and even if you do experience it, that $50 part I linked usually clears it up. Amazon has money-back guarantee and loose return policy, so no worries there either.

I just wanted to make sure that I didn't have to buy the extra stuff to make it work. That's all.

Nah, noise like this is highly situational. In fact, simply using different cables or hooking them up a different way can often resolve it. The ISOMAX transformer I posted is very useful to have though, because CATV buzz is very very common in many setups.

I'm still eyeing the 605. Been watching the price on Amazon, which was at a low of $399 a few weeks ago and I was waiting for a sale to save a few more bucks before I took the plunge. But now it's up to $469.
