Bose Acoustimass 10 series II system

So, my dad has the Bose Acoustimass 10 series II system for his home theater speakers. (That link is to the series IV system) He's using an old JVC A/V receiver to drive them and I got his digital audio connections setup about 2 weeks ago so he could get more performance from his gear.

He's wanting better audio performance from his HT and I'm wanting him to replace his speaker system. The A/V receiver also needs to be replaced, but that's another thread of discussion.

Here is a link to reviews on the Acoustimass 10 series II. Here is a link to the PDF owners manual for the system.

So, he spent about $900 (I'm guessing) on the speaker system many moon ago. For $900 today, what you recommend for a 5.1 replacement? If possible, what about a 7.1 arrangement?

Thanks!

Peace...

4 B&W LM1's & a B&W VM 1 as the center. This might put you just over and I didnt even include a sub (though I would suggest an AS1), but I think this would make a great setup for the money.

Tom

Check out the PSB line while you are at it. I pieced together a nice little system consisting of 3 CLR1 ( $169 Ea ) speakers for the front sound stage, a pair of Alpha LR1 ( $199/pr ), and a Sub 1 ( $349 ). I have demo'd PSBs and have been quite impressed with them. This is about a Ben and a Grant more than what you are asking for, but IMHO is an astounding value for the money.

Another one is ( yep, you guessed it )

Boston Acoustics.

CR67 ( $249pr ), CR57 ( $179pr ), CRC Center ( $200 ), and PV500 ( $350 ) for a total of $978. I LOVE my BA speakers and can't say anything bad about them.

A second suggestion to actually stay closer to budget and include a sub

$199.99x2 2 Polk Floorstanding Speaker Monitor 50 (I use these as my fronts and love them)
$129.99x2 2 Polk Bookshelf Speakers M10
$179.99 1 Polk Center Channel Speaker CS1
$159.99 1 Boston Acoustics 8" Subwoofer XB2

$199.99
$129.99
$179.99
$159.99
--------
$999.94

Its under a thousand

You could also replace the fronts with M20's and save $140

Alternatives...

ONIX X-Series Speakers from AV123

(4) X-LS Bookshelf Speakers = $438
(1) X-CS Center = $139
(1) X-Sub Subwoofer = $199

Total = $776

Very Well reviwed speakers from a very well respected ID company. The Speakers are still realtively small without sacrificing fidelity for aesthetics.

Athena Audition Series (@Audio Advisor)

(2) Athena Audition AS-F1.2 Tower Speakers = $249
(2) Athena Audition B1.2 Speakers = $100
(1) Athena Audition AS-C1.2 Center Channel Speaker = $100
(1) Athena Audition AS-P6000 Subwoofer = $270

Total $719

OR

Athena - Micra 6 Home Theater System

Total $400

Depending on room size, aesthetic preference and performance needs, one of these two Athena systems is might fit the bill.

Aperion Audio Intimus 422 Harmony System

(4) Intimus 422-LR Satellite Speakers
(1) Intimus 422-C Center Channel Speaker
(1) Intimus S8, 8" Powered Subwoofer

Total Package Price $799

Another well repected ID company offering an alternative to miniature cube speakers with higher fidelity.

Ascend Acoustics HTM-200 and HSU STF-2
(5) Ascend Acoustics HTM-200 Satellite Speakers =$608
(1) Hsu STF-2 Subwoofer = $349

Total $957

A good candidate for a modest surround set up. The 5 identical speakers will ensure a nice seamless, immersive soundfield for movies.

Axiom Audio

(4) M2v2 Bookshelves = $592
(1) VP100v2 Center = $255
(1) EP125v2 Subwoofer = $430

Total $1277

A slight bit over the budget but definitely a giant leap in quality from the BOSE. You can qualify for a 5% discount off of the entire purchase price if you buy a full setup.

In any case, these are just a few examples of sytems that fall close to the target budget...there are a whole lot more offerings out there. One could even mix and match components or pick up a more powerful sub (if one were so inclined).

Anyway...good luck and happy shopping.

Anything that doesn't say Bose on it.
