Speaker placement

I recently had to buy two new speakers to fill out my new 7.1 surround system, and the new speakers, which I had planned to use as the sides, are actually bigger and louder than my rears, so should I use the new speakers for the rear, or should they be on the sides? Please give your advice.

It's not us, its you and that scary avatar!

I'd probably use the larger fuller sounding ones for the rear but I don't have a 7.1 configuration so can't really comment with any 'sound' advice. It's all going to be callibrated anyway, right? I guess I'd go with whatever speakers match your fronts better since I imagine the sides are just 'filler' and may not get much data sent to them anyway.

Well, there's my 2cents.

Probably not great help for you, but maybe just try out a soundtrack you like both ways, or however many different ways you can set-up things, and see which setup is suitable for you.

If your system has the single speaker control option where you can adjust level/quality of each speaker separately, then appearance and convenience of location can be considered, as you can "fine tune" the speakers in relation to each other.

Im not sure how the decoding is done and how it determines what to push where. I would think that would be the pace to start. Personally, I would think you want the richer sound (not louder) as the furthest back. So which speakers sound richer?

In my 7.1 set up…the two back speakers (BSL & BSR) are dinky little Yamahas that I’ve had forever and will upgrade one day. The other two (SL & SR) are larger and better PSB speakers that match everything else I have. I find the set up is good as very little of the surround action comes from the back two speakers. When I am listening in 5.1 they are inactive (unless I engage EX encoding). I think you’d be safe with the larger speakers on the side…

Not sure if that helps at all…
